A Reuters News Alert states: President George W. Bush would like to see a lengthy U.S. troop presence in Iraq like the one in South Korea to provide stability but not in a frontline combat role, the White House said on Wednesday.
Do you remember all of the concerns raised years ago about troops being permanently stationed in Iraq? The Twig administration denied the concerns and eventually people changed topics. However, The Twig must feel we have forgotten these discussions and apparently making the bold statement is designed to counter troop withdrawal discussions. By arguing troops should stay, he pushes the discussion to his side of the discussions. Maybe this announcement is no different from the British announcement that 4,000 troops will remain in Iraq for up to 5 years. Maybe someone should tell the U.S. troops who are wondering when they are coming home. Actually, this announcement feels like the way the administration handled initial concerns about the cost of the Bush War. Do you recall all of the early figures? A senior official said one long-term plan would have 30,000 to 50,000 U.S. forces in Iraq for five to 10 years beyond 2009. |
